Whatever one's view of the
wisdom of meeting in New
Orleans in August, the 1999
convention seems to have been a
great success. The Law Division
sponsored a number of outstand-
ing sessions that I know many of
you had the chance to enjoy. A
few of the highlights included:
+ A stimulating panel, organized
by Mike Perkins, on Huey Long
and media taxation - the mix of
history and contemporary consti-
tutional debate was wonderful.
* A challenging panel, put
together by Diane Borden, about
the Clinton-Lewinsky affair and
the relationship between gender
and reputation.
+ Our follow-up panel on different
voices in textbook authorship.
+ An inspiring panel, organized by
Craig Sanders, on the relationship
between teaching and tenure.
+ Several co-sponsored panels
related to the Internet, including
panels dealing with intellectual
property and teaching, hate speech
web sites, and pornography issues.

+ A variety of other exciting
panels and paper sessions.
Many thanks to all of the
organizers, participants, modera-
tors, discussants, and other vital
folks who made this year's
convention a success. Thanks also
to the Division officers - and
most particularly to outgoing
Division Head Barbara Petersen
for her tireless efforts.
The Law Division is fortunate
to have two outstanding members
joining the leadership track this
year. Michelle Johnson, now of
Marist College, was ratified by the
membership to step into the
position of vice head and program
chair. Michelle has done great
work with the Ethics interest
group (recently upgraded to full
Division status through Michelle's
and others' efforts) and is a
marvelous addition to our Divi-
sion leadership. Another great
addition is Sandra Chance,
University of Florida, who was
elected to the position of clerk and
Media Law Notes editor. Sandra is
a former media attorney who has
recently accepted the job of dir-
ector of the Brechner Center for
Freedom of Information. We are
immensely pleased to have both
Michelle and Sandra on board.
Let me say a few words about
plans for the 2000 Phoenix
convention. Michelle Johnson is
already gathering programming
ideas, and we would certainly like
to have your thoughts. Please feel

free to contact either of us with
any suggestions you may have.
Finally, let me say a few words
about our Division journal, Com-
munication Law and Policy. At
the last convention, the Publica-
tions Policy Committee, which
consists of three appointed
Division members, along with the
Division head, vice head, and
clerk, met with a representative of
Lawrence Erlbaum Associates,
which publishes the journal.
Erlbaum is concerned that the
journal's institutional subscrip-
tions are not growing at a faster
rate. Our journal is doing great
things, first under the editorship of
Bob Trager, and now under Tom
Schwartz, and we need to do
everything we can to assure that it
both survives and prospers. I'd
like to urge each of you to make
every effort to contact your on-
campus libraries - both general
libraries and law libraries - and
strongly suggest a subscription.
This is of course a time of cut-
backs in many library's journal
subscriptions, but I think some
concerted effort by the Division
could have a significant effect.
