CANADA'S GENETIC NON-DISCRIMINATION
ACT: FALSE SECURITY FOR CUSTOMERS OF
DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER GENETIC TESTING
SERVICES

In the late twentieth century, Direct-to-
Consumer    Genetic  Testing  (DTC-GT)
companies appeared in the market, selling
at home genetic tests. These tests require
customers to collect their DNA sample and
mail it to the DTC-GT company for analy-
sis. Upon analyzing the customer's DNA,
the DTC-GT company sends the customer a
report outlining his or her genetic risk of de-
veloping a particular disease. The popular-
ity of these companies has increased rapidly
in the past few years. However, customers,
researchers, and public health officials have
expressed concerns about the privacy risks
associated with ordering a DTC genetic test.

La fin du vingtieme siecle a vu l'apparition
d'entreprises qui vendent des tests gend-
tiques offerts directement aux consomma-
teurs (TG-ODC) dont le pr616vement se
fait chez soi. Pour effectuer ces tests, les
clients sont obliges de prelever un dchantil-
lion d'ADN et de l'envoyer a l'entreprise
TG-ODC pour analyse. Suite a ladite ana-
lyse, l'entreprise TG-ODC fournit un rap-
port qui resume les risques gendtiques du
developpement de certaines maladies. La
popularite de ces entreprises s'est rapide-
ment accrue au cours des dernieres anndes.
