Over 4,000 separate items (exclu sive of periodicals currently received and items of temporary value) were acquired during the past year, bringing the total for the collection to 57,406 bound volumes. In addition to the regular current growth, consider- able progress was made in strengthening the Library's holdings in several important classes, among which are the collections of American statutory materials, legal periodicals, bar association publications and state attorney general reports. The Library is now fairly well equipped for most ordinary legal research work, but much remains to be secured for various special fields of study, as well as for the upbuilding of an adequate legal histori- cal collection. The report this year calls special attention to the fact that the Li- brary serves a much wider public than is usually suspected, for although it is a law library and a department of the Law School, the fact should not be lost sight of that the Library is open for service during the entire summer, although the Law School is not in session. Thus the Library is a department that must function effectively every month in the year, and a number of weeks in the ummer are among the busiest, for it must respond to the demands of (1 Law School faculty members, several of whom do inten- sive work each summer; (2) students preparing to take the examinations for admission to the bar and those doing independent work; (3) the Legal Aid Clinic, which is in continuous operation; (4) Law and Contemporary Problems, for which some work must always be carried on in the summer, and finally. (5) the Library staff itself for, regardless of the limited extent to which the library is being used at any given time, its development requires an unbroken continuity, But the foregoing list accounts only for the extension throughout the summer of the more usual demands of the regular academic year. Mention should also be made of several classes of persons embraced within the larger group that is served by the Library, namely, (1) non-Law School faculty members and students who use the legal collection in connection with specific courses requiring reference work in the Law Library; (2) graduate students doing advanced work dependent in whole or in part upon the use of legal materials, and (3) such members of the legal profession as find the Library useful to them in connection with their practice. During the past year 42 persons have given books, pamphlets., and other materials to the Zibrary, thus materially assisting in its development through the addition of valuable individual books, important reports, in- teresting pamphlets, and periodical numbers helpful in completing sets. In order to facilitate the work of the reference department the Library carries on an aggressive cataloging program. To date over 170,000 separate catalog cards have been prepared and filed in the public catalog in the Law
