handle is hein.journals/lwphil8 and id is 1 raw text is: PREFACE The papers included in this issue were presented in a conference Rights and the Philosophy of Law: Legal, Moral and Political Ques- tions, held at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, March 25-27, 1988. The meeting was planned and organized by Professor Eugenio Bulygin (Buenos Aires), Professor Alan Goldman (Miami), Professor Carlos Nino (Buenos Aires), Professor Howard Pospesel (Miami), and the undersigned. Our main purpose was to bring to- gether a group of philosophers and legal scholars from Europe, South and North America to discuss the logical, moral and political questions concerning human rights and the concept of right in general. The University of Miami campus in Coral Gables provided an ideal venue for such a meeting - especially during the month of March. A wide variety of questions related to the concept of right were discussed at the meeting: the role of the concepts of duty and right in our understanding of moral and political life (Joseph Raz, 'Liberating Duties'); the concepts of discretion and right as legal techniques (Neil MacCormick, 'Discretion and rights'); the communitarian vs. the liberal view of rights (Carlos Nino, The Communitarian Challenge to Liberal Rights'); the conceptual difficulties related to the rights of peoples and other collectivities (David Makinson, 'On Attributing Rights to All Peoples: Some Logical Questions'); the possibility of inconsistencies among rights and values (Roberto Vernengo, 'Human Rights and Axiological Inconsistencies'); and the history of the con- cepts of right and privilege in American law (Patrick O. Gudridge, 'Privileges and Permissions: The Civil Rights Act of 1875'). The conference was not exclusively devoted to the concept of right: there were also discussions on the nature of legal and moral reasoning (Alan Goldman, 'Legal Reasoning as a Model for Moral Reasoning'), the nature and function of political theory, the concepts of legal ability and competence, on norm conflicts, and on the relationship between Law and Philosophy 8: 1-2, 1989. © 1989 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
