The extent of interchange between the two fields has varied considerably in different eras. In recent years there has been much interest in increasing the level of such interchange. There is a growing perception that many issues can best be understood if they are approached utilizing the results of research in both law and philosophy. There are many scholars in each field who have mastered relevant portions of the other, either directly through training in both, or more informally through individual research. This group of scholars has taken the lead in developing and defining the areas of interaction. Journals in either of the two fields are not always sympathetic to work by scholars in the other, partly due to format and partly due to differences in approach. Hence scholars tend to publish in journals in their own field, which to some extent inhibits change. Law and Philosophy seeks to foster and facilitate exchange between legal scholars and philosophers. This journal will publish papers ranging from short discussion pieces to sustained essays. Every attempt will be made to prohibit format requirements from inhibiting exchange. We will develop a book review section and a 'review of the literature' section that will help readers stay abreast of relevant work in law and philosophy. The editorial board, which will guide the development of the journal, will be balanced between legal scholars and philosophers, with several members bridging the two areas. We hope the results of such interaction will be available to an even wider audience in both law and philos- ophy and to those concerned with public policy and legal practice. Law and Philosophy will be open to all approaches in both areas and to work in any of the major legal traditions - common law, civil law, or the socialist tradition. The editors encourage papers 1
