EDITORIAL
In July 1985 our former Editor in Chief Professor B.S. Jackson took up
a new post as Professor of Law at the University of Kent at Canterbury.
In this issue of the Liverpool Law Review we extend our gratitude to
him for his contribution to the Review over the past 8 years.
Contribution is an understatement. The idea of a law journal at
Liverpool Polytechnic emanated from Bernard. He saw it through to
reality. He exercised a very close scrutiny over it until the very recent
past. His enthusiasm and determination enabled it to overcome early
production difficulties. He toiled for many hours to ensure that it
appeared on time and, so far as was humanly possible, without
typographical errors or semantic incongruities. That the present
members of the editorial board are able to carry on the high standards
expected by Bernard is in no small measure due to the
encouragement and patience he accorded to us when we were his
apprentices. Not that we always agreed with what appeared to some to
be an all consuming passion for jurisprudence and semiotics! A
generalist journal ought not to be overburdened with material for which
practitioners find little use. Nevertheless Bernard did in fact encourage
contributions which enabled a balance to be maintained between
largely theoretical and practical perspectives. Moreover, if one can
judge from the success of the jurisprudence special issue, he correctly
perceived the demands of the market place.
It is difficult to single out a particular contribution for special praise.
Nevertheless one can say with certainty that without Bernard's
encouragement there are some people who would never have
published. Perhaps this was his greatest achievement. The present
editorial board will continue the policy of encouraging new authors.
We wish Bernard and his family well in the future and we know that he
will continue to have interest in, and affection for, the journal that was
