JOHN AND MARY CONKERTON - AN APPRECIATION
Barrie Marsh*
I am delighted that this issue of the Liverpool Law
Review has been dedicated to the memory of the late John
and Mary Conkerton, both of whom died in 1979. The issue
contains articles on topics which were of particular interest
to the Conkertons.
I first knew John and Mary in about 1956 when I was a
student at what was then Gibson and Weldons in Guildford.
That establishment is, of course, now the College of Law.
Mary, having read history and law at Girton College,
Cambridge, was admitted as a Solicitor in 1955 and then
joined the tutorial staff of Gibson and Weldon. She was
Assistant Editor of Law Notes. It was at Gibsons that
Mary met John Conkerton, who had read Modern History at
Oriel College, Oxford, and who himself was a lecturer in
Guildford. John served his articles in Local Government and
was admitted in 1954.
John and Mary came to Liverpool in 1963 to lecture at
the Liverpool College of Commerce (later Liverpool
Polytechnic). They were responsible for building up the
courses for the Law Society's Final Examinations. These
courses were tremendously successful. Twelve students
attended in 1963 and by 1970 over 300 students were
attending the Finals Course. The pass rate at one stage was
the highest in the country - even, I think, higher than that of
the College of Law itself.
In 1974, when it seemed likely that the Polytechnic was
about to discontinue the Solicitors' Finals Course (the
College of Law having opened in Chester) John and Mary
moved on to the Faculty of Law at the University of
Liverpool.
