HIGH NIXON PRAISE FOR YLS
DRUG ABUSE EDUCATION PROGRAM
An excellent program.
An outstanding example of how private organizations can
effectively become involved in helping attack the problems
which confront our country.
With these words, and many others, President Nixon
praised the Drug Abuse Education Program of the Young
Lawyer's Section at the White House on August 13, during a
50-minute conference with YIS officers and the
Co-Chairmen of the Drug Abuse Committee.
The program consists of a young lawyer and a medical
doctor explaining the medical and legal aspects and effects of
illegal drug abuse to junior high school age students in
assembly type programs. Preaching and moralizing are
discouraged. The intent of the program is to objectively lay
out all of the facts, both legal and medical and then let the
students make their own decision on whether they wish to
become involved at all with drugs and narcotics.
In the fall of 1969 YLS Chairman, Tom Cochran, had
offered the services of our 50,000 members to the White
House to aid in solving any of the current domestic
problems; the Nixon response was a suggestion that the YLS
develop an educational drug abuse program for our younger
citizens.
Examination of pilot projects of this type indicated that
the medical-legal drug education program sponsored by the
Florida young lawyers in the junior high schools was the best
available. During late 1969 and early 1970, the YLS has

adopted the Florida program for presentation in all junior
high schools throughout the nation during the coming school
year.
An Operational Handbook explaining exactly how the
program has been successfully sponsored in Florida has been
prepared and is available from the American Bar Association,
1155 East 60th Street, Chicago, Illinois 60637. The
Handbook was prepared by Committee Co-Chairman, David
E. Ward, Jr., of Tampa, Florida, who was instrumental in the
success of the Florida program.
Co-Chairman, Allen E. Brennecke of Marshalltown, Iowa,
ably assisted by the committee's ten regional chairmen, now
has appointed fifty state chairmen and one for the District of
Columbia, who will be responsible for seeing that the
program is offered to the junior high schools in their
respective states. These chairmen are:
