The Ritz Carlton Hotel, located on Chicago's magnifi- cent Michigan Avenue, will be the headquarters for the meeting. Accommodations will also be available at the Drake Hotel. Registrants will be welcomed on Friday morning, November 9, by the Honorable Jane Byrne, Mayor of the City of Chicago. Professor Faust F. Rossi of Cornell Law School will present an update of national evidence trends, followed by a debate on whether lawyers should be excluded from jury selection process in the federal courts. Our luncheon speaker on Friday will be the Rev- erend Jesse L. Jackson, President and Chairman of the Board, Operation PUSH. Five of the Section's committees will present exciting and informative programs on Friday afternoon. On Fri- day evening, the Section will host a reception and buffet at the Preston Bradley Hall of the Chicago Public Li- brary in honor of the Attorney General of the United States, the Honorable Benjamin R. Civiletti. The Pres- ton Bradley Hall is a recently restored architectural masterpiece. On Saturday morning, November 10, 1979, five Sec- tion committees will present programs. Attorney Gen- eral Civiletti will speak at lunch on Saturday.- On Saturday afternoon, V. Hale Starr, a specialist in communication research, Will help you learn how to im- prove your credibility with a jury. We will then hear debate on the question: If trial lawyers were automo- biles, would 75 percent be recalled? The program will be closed by Gerry L. Spence, the Jackson, Wyoming lawyer who won a $10 million verdict against Kerr-Mc- Gee in the Karen Silkwood case. You will want to attend the Chicago meeting. A de- tailed description of the program and a registration form are on pages 16-20. The Section is grateful to pro- gram chairman Joan M. Hall, Chicago, for developing and coordinating this Fall Meeting of extraordinary quality and interest. Section-State Bars Liaison Network Established Fifty thousand trial lawyers will benefit from the liaison established between the Section of Litigation and state bar associations. Albert Fendig, Jr., Committee Chair- man, announced that as of August 1, 1979, eleven state bar associations have appointed liaison representatives to the Section of Litigation. The program, Fendig states, will provide a direct two-way channel of communication between the Section and state and local elements of the bar. The result will be to increase dramatically the ability of the Section to focus on improving the trial system of justice. It is expected that virtually all state bar and large local associations invited will appoint two-year liaison representatives to provide program continuity. Chairman Lundquist advised the June Council meeting that the response of bar presidents in accepting this program graphically reflects appreciation of the practical value of the activities of the Litigation Section to the trial bar. By this liaison, Section-generated programs will become accessible to the vast majority of lawyers who go to court but have no opportunity to attend ABA seminars or institutes. In addition, through its liaison, the membership of the associations will have a voice in ex- pressing representative opinions vital to the trial bar. Fendig states that the high priority assigned to the establishment of this liaison by Mr. Lundquist, Mr. Cor- boy and the Council has created an innovative concept of cooperation between national and local elements of the trial bar which allows concentrated focus by large numbers of trial lawyers and the judiciary on problems affecting the trial bench and bar. The tongues of more than 50,000 trial lawyers added to our Section member- ship may provide the voice needed to speak for and im- prove the trial system of justice. Litigation Section committee chairmen will utilize the liaison to advance their committee programs .by com- municating directly with the state bar liaison represen- tatives.
