Penn State University's long-time NCAA compliance director has been around long enough to witness the various ways that unscrupulous agents can ruin the eligibility of student-athletes as well as establish strong personal relationships within the professional sports industry. A long-time women's basketball coach at the University of South Florida has been suspended after an internal investigation concluded that she dismissed a player, Dione Smith, for filing a racial discrimination claim against her. Jerry Ann Winters, 52, issued a statement through her Tampa attorney promising to appeal the Oct. 25 ruling. USF vice president Laurey Stryker will consider the appeal and have 20 business days to render a decision. Athletic Director Paul Griffin said the university would use that time to determine what further disciplinary action, if any, is warranted against Winters.
