Editorial
I was honoured to accept the offer from The British Psychological Society to become the
new editor of Legal and Criminological Psychology. The founding editors, Mary
McMurran and Sally Lloyd-Bostock, encouraged and fostered forensic psychology in the
United Kingdom by publishing innovative and interesting research articles. Ron
Blackburn, as subsequent editor, continued this tradition and under his guidance, the
journal thrived. Indeed, the number of submissions has steadily increased in recent
years. One of the main strengths of the journal is its broad base appeal and international
scholarship. This is now reflected in the appointment of associate editors from the
United Kingdom, USA, Europe and New Zealand. The diversity of topics typically
covered by psychology and law researchers requires an equally diverse range of
associate editors. All associate editors are distinguished scholars in their specialized
area, and an eminent group of editorial consultants will further assist in the editorial
process. Thus, Legal and Criminological Psychology will continue to contribute to the
development of psychology and law with high quality research papers.
Researchers can enhance our knowledge and understanding regarding legal
processes by three main means: First, the conducting and reporting of original research;
second, by summarizing, integrating and reviewing research literature; and finally,
through the development and writing of theoretical papers. Submissions from each
category are welcome, and essential for any thriving research area. At present, most
papers submitted to Legal and Criminological Psychology are original research reports.
These are of a high quality and I would like to see this trend continue, but I would also
like to encourage the submission of theoretical and, in particular, review papers. With
the increase in psychology and law research, together with researchers' and
practitioners' daily work chores, most of us struggle to keep abreast of the latest
advances in our field. Review papers serve an important function in this regard.
Moreover, the conclusions drawn from a thorough review may be more reliable than
those based on an individual research paper as they integrate findings across studies;
involve meta-analysis and/or allow for the further development of theoretical
frameworks. Thus, I would like to invite scholars to submit more reflective review
articles. Together we can further strengthen Legal and Criminological Psychology as an
internationally renowned journal.
