Editorial
We are very pleased to introduce the first issue of a new journal of The British
Psychological Society-Legal and Criminological Pycholog. This journal aims to advance
scientific and professional knowledge in the wide-ranging field that its title defines. It
is in response to the growth in productivity and significance of psychological
contributions in this area that The British Psychological Society has added Legal and
Criminological Psychology to its list of internationally esteemed journals.
As the field has deyeloped, it has broadened to embrace an increasing variety of
topics to the extent that it is difficult to list all the issues on which papers are invited.
Current research and practice relates to both civil and criminal law, and covers, for
example, the psychology of disputing and justice; legal decision making; witness
psychology; methods of policing and crime detection; the understanding, management
and treatment of offenders; victimology; and the training of other professionals
working in the justice system. We wish to represent all areas of endeavour.
We believe also that it is essential that developments in empirical research and
practice should be accompanied by continuing critical discussion of their theoretical,
methodological and ethical basis. We shall encourage debate in the pages of the
journal.
The field is multidisciplinary, and it is our intention that both readers and
contributors should be from a diversity of academic and professional backgrounds,
including forensic psychiatrists, criminologists, lawyers, police, probation officers and
prison personnel. As a journal of The British Psychological Society, however, the
defining discipline is psychology. We are also committed to establishing an
international journal. This first issue illustrates some of the topics, disciplines, and
geographical spread that we seek to represent.
In a new move for The British Psychological Society, two Editors were appointed
for Legal and Criminological Psycholog, one with a background in criminological
psychology and the other in legal psychology. The purpose of this liaison is to enhance
communication and cross-fertilization in this very catholic field. In order to ensure that
all submissions are expertly dealt with, we have appointed Associate Editors and an
Editorial Board representing a broad range of expertise in different areas of legal and
criminological psychology and a wide geographical distribution.
We look forward to developing Legal and Criminological Psychology in its early years.
