The Honorable Russell W. Peterson, Governor of Delaware, was named Chairman of the new Commis- sion which will set national goals, performance standards, and priorities for improving the nation's criminal justice system. Governor Peterson is Chairman of the National Governors' Conference Committee on Crime Re- duction and Public Safety. Sheriff Peter J. Pitchess of Los Angeles, Cali- fornia, was named Vice Chairman of the Standards and Goals Commission. What we are inaugurating here to- day is a new phase in the war against crime. Under the leadership of Gover- nor Peterson and Sheriff Pitchess, this new Commission will provide the working blueprint we need to modern- ize our criminal justice system and reduce crime, Mr. Leonard said. The 22-member Commission will be composed of members of the criminal justice system, state and local officials, (Continued on page 3) Williamsburg Is Site for First National Corrections Conference Attorney General John N. Mitchell has announced that the First National Conference on Corrections will be held from December 5 through December 8 at the Williamsburg Conference Cen- ter in Williamsburg, Virginia. The country's corrections experts are being called together for the four- day session in response to President Richard M. Nixon's directive last June 10, Mr. Mitchell said. Corrections sy stern officials, educa- tors, rehabilt ation specialists, former offenders, voluntee group members, labor representatives, minority group leaders and others interested in Amer- ican corrections problems have been invLted to the meeting, which will be patterned after the First National Con- ference on the Judiciary held in Wil- liamsburg last March. f President Nixon's June directive noted that the interest in and concern about the state of our jails, prisons and corrections programs is wide- spread. The Chief Justice, the Con- gress, professional groups such as the American Bar Association, and state and local governments all share our desire to achieve programs in this important area. We should build on this commnuity of interest.
