AND HUGH BROWN MCNATT JOHNBELL: It is a delightful day to be here together with the Honorable Marion T. Pope, previously Chief Judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals, and Hugh Brown McNatt, Georgia's great advocate for the rich and the powerffil. This Interview is on behalf of the Georgia Legal History Foundation for the Journal of Southem Legal Htory, a great scholarly journal. Judge Pope, give us a brief background of where you were born, where you grew up, and your early life before we move to your other expeniences. CHIEF JUDGE POPE: I was born in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia. I don't know why my father was there but he met my mother in Griffin, Spalding County. My mother and father were both brunette, and I'm told when the nurses brought me to my mother, she began to cry. They said, Mrs. Pope, why are you crying? You have a fine looking baby boy. She said, I know but he's red-headed. I had a head full of red hair, and I guess it was this ancestral thing that jumped several generations. My dad was Marion Thomas Pope, Sr., and I am Marion Thomas Pope, Jr. He went by Tom because his father was Thomas also. My mother was Hulett. I think she told me she was named after the doctor who delivered her, a Dr. Hulett Irene Clark Pope. My mother raised me, and she was a very good mother. My dad was in the background. He would always supply whatever he thought we needed, but mother was the one who really is the closest to me, my brother, Bobby, and my sister, Mary Ann. My youngest 1
