ROBERT GINSBERG, Executive Editor
James Wilbur founded the Journal of Value Inquiry in 1967 and devel-
oped it through twenty-four volumes into the world's premier philos-
ophic periodical devoted to value study. The 94 issues edited by James
Wilbur, based on 2,420 essays submitted, are a living record of the extra-
ordinary richness of philosophical inquiry into value that has spanned three
decades. Wilbur's vision of the valuable was broad enough to make room
for articles on the foundations of mathematics and logic, applied studies
of controversial questions troubling society, interpretive and evalu-
ative accounts of the grand thinkers in the history of Western thought from
Plato to Heidegger, as well as new theoretical efforts at understanding
the nature of value itself. Throughout its distinguished history the Journal
has been graced by cosmopolitanism: its authorship and its readership is
worldwide.
As the Journal moves into its twenty-fifth year, under its second Execu-
tive Editor, it reaffirms its commitment to those values of excellence,
diversity, and cosmopolitanism that Wilbur made its hallmarks. Thanks to
the trust and professional vision of our publisher, Kluwer Academic
Publishers, the Journal will expand in several ways to better accomplish its
mission.
The Journal will now carry enough pages to make a regular feature of its
hitherto occasional book reviewing. The newly revived Book Department,
under the direction of Sander H. Lee, President of the International Society
for Value Inquiry, will serve the community of scholars by extending
access to the current literature. Books in all languages will be considered,
and Editor Lee welcomes reviewers throughout the world to notify him of
their availability.
Another valuable service to the readership will come from the develop-
ment of the Journal's News Department under the editorship of John M.
Abbarno, President of the American Society for Value Inquiry. Editor
Abbarno will expand the pages hitherto reserved solely for news of the
American Society to include matters of interest concerning values from
throughout the world, including notices of conferences, grants, and organiza-
tional activities.
From its founding the Journal has planned publication of special issues,
notably for the proceedings of the Annual Conference on Value Inquiry,
