This edition of the journal of Radio and Audio Media best exemplifies what excited
me about the journal from the very first few volumes: diversity. Contemporary
studies combined with historical treatments of past broadcasting phenomena and
expository work enlightening scholars about the nature and function of radio around
the world have been ]RAM's hallmark.
The 13 pieces of original research herein start boldly. The first five articles on
contemporary research run the gamut of work on incorporation of new media in
existing broadcast models to advancement of an organizational/persuasive model
for station development to the obscure (yet compelling) topic of DXing as practiced
even today. From there six historical approaches have us considering everything
from a revised understanding of who first advanced the (de)regulatory environment
we now enjoy (I'll leave you all guessing as to whether this sentence contains
sarcasm) to a case study which illuminates how live performance on radio came to
its demise. This is followed by two articles about radio on the African continent,
Botswana and South Africa in particular. Finally, three books are reviewed for your
edification.
As I begin my last volume as editor, I must once again praise the ]RAM editorial
board for its timely and thorough efforts. Moreover, our scholarly community should
offer heartfelt thanks to those scholars whose work was submitted, but not accepted
for publication. Quality issues are only possible when we have much excellent
scholarship to choose from. Thank you for putting your work to the test. May great
things happen to thoughtful, hardworking scholars.
