From the Editor
Last year at this time, in my introduction to the second volume of the
Journal of Quantitative Criminology, I focused on the issue of stability. The
first biennium of any journal is the critical stage in which survival remains
the primary concern. As we begin our third year in print, I believe that the
journal is here to stay-survival is no longer in question. At this point in
the development of JQC, moreover, we are striving toward building strength
and prominence in the discipline of criminology. The journal has come a
long way in a relatively short period of time, further than I had anticipated.
Responsibility for this growth rests with the many contributors, subscribers,
and reviewers.
I am gratified that the papers we have published have been both
substantial in contribution and diverse in content. Moreover, in viewing
the variety of approaches spanned by the last volume, my objective to avoid
esoterica and to offer something for everyone is being met, at least in part.
I have revised the statement of scope of the journal to emphasize the broad
range of quantitative research welcome in these pages.
We have also instituted two additional features in our publication
plans. First, we have in different stages of development two special-issue
projects. We expect to publish special editions approximately every other
year on specific areas of quantitative research. Although the efforts of guest
editors may have the secondary benefit of lightening my load just a bit, this
decision to accept thematic issues reflects the unified nature of many research
areas within criminology.
The other new feature is far more modest a step. We continue to resist
publishing book reviews, yet the growing quantitative literature in a number
of areas has encouraged us to consider commissioning review essays. This
issue contains the first of such essays, and we are planning for one each
year, assuming that the literature continues to support them.
