handle is hein.journals/jquantc17 and id is 1 raw text is: Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Vol. 17, No. 1, 2001

Editor's Note
This issue marks the formal beginning of my editorship of the Journal
of Quantitative Criminology.Michael Maltz was enormously helpful in mov-
ing the journal from Chicago to Albany, and he left me with a backlog of
strong contributions that will fill the next several issues. I thank Mike
greatly for his generosity and continuing support. I also thank David Forde,
Joan McCord, Raymond Paternoster, and David Weisburd for their work
as associate editors during Mike's term, and Alan Lizotte and Colin Loftin
for agreeing to undertake those responsibilities for me.
Beginning with its first issue, James Alan Fox helped place JQC among
the major journals in criminology and criminal justice. His successors, John
Laub and Michael Maltz, continued the journal on the path of excellence
that Fox had set. My goal as editor is to carry on the tradition of quality
established by my predecessors. In this, I will be guided by the expertise and
dedication of JQC's editorial board and reviewers.
As have previous editors, I believe that the mission of the Journal of
Quantitative Criminology is to publish the best empirical scholarship in the
area of criminology and criminal justice. This encompasses papers with cut-
ting-edge analytic techniques, but it also includes articles that apply more
common methods to important substantive issues. The journal's distinctive
feature is its emphasis on quantitative research, and it welcomes all work
that seeks to develop a better empirical understanding of crime and related
topics.
