CHANGES IN ORGANIZATIONS, WORK, AND
CAREERS: IMPLICATIONS FOR FACULTY IN
COLLEGES OF BUSINESS

                                                   By: Paul Lyons*

INTRODUCTION'
Organizations, careers, and work as we know them are changing. For
example, many organizations are shifting from functional structures to
networked structures, individual careers move from tracks to sequences
of project assignments, and team-based organizations require self-
management and governance skills at work.' In some organizations and
industries change takes place rapidly and on such a scale that business
school graduates are entering work situations that may differ a great
deal from what was identified in their collegiate education.
The advent this decade of e-commerce and e-corporations has
challenged many well-known and, perhaps, comfortable business
relationships.' Many commonly understood relationships have been
turned topsy-turvy with the new reality that the customer has attained
more control over purchase, trade, and other relationships. Web-based
and individual search economies may replace distribution economies and
the traditional logic of advertising and marketing becomes inverted.
