Foreword
The phenomenon of holy places arouses much research interest: What makes
a place sacred? What are the human practices that characterize activity in a
holy place? Is it justified to grant holy places special protection? Is ownership
of a holy place or affiliation with it possible, and if so, how can it be achieved?
How should conflicts between different groups be resolved regarding owner-
ship or affiliation, and is it possible to reach a peaceful settlement in the
matter?
These and many other questions are discussed in the articles in this volume,
which were first presented at a conference held in June 2019 at Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity, at the initiative of the journal. The authors of the articles come from a va-
riety of disciplines: sociology and anthropology, political philosophy, and law.
Some of the articles deal with the general questions, others focus on particular
holy places in India, Turkey, and Israel. We hope that the conceptual richness
and disciplinary diversity expressed in the articles in this volume will make a
contribution to understanding the phenomenon of holy places and to formu-
lating guiding principles for resolving conflicts that surround such places.
