EDITORIAL
In memoriam - Franz von Benda-Beckmann (1941-2013)
This special issue of The Journal ofLegal Pluralism is dedicated to the memory of Franz
von Benda-Beckmann. Together with his wife, Keebet von Benda-Beckmann, Franz
served as head of the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Social Anthropology Working
Group on Legal Pluralism from 2000 to 2012. Franz and Keebet initiated this special issue
of The Journal ofLegal Pluralism by inviting the contributors to a workshop at the MPI in
November 2012. This workshop on law and temporality was to be the last workshop orga-
nized by them for the MPI. The workshop was a great success, and the retirement party
that followed was a wonderful occasion. Sadly, Franz passed away in January 2013 and is
sadly missed by all his colleagues. He will be remembered as a generous mentor to stu-
dents and colleagues from around the world, and as a kind and supportive colleague.
Everyone who knew him well benefitted from his broad-ranging and inspiring
scholarship.
In particular, colleagues interested in legal pluralism owe a great debt to Franz von
Benda-Beckmann. Franz and Keebet were part of the group that established the Commis-
sion on Legal Pluralism, and both have been longtime members of the Editorial Board of
The Journal of Legal Pluralism. Franz' ideas, suggestions and energy will be missed
sorely in the Commission, and on the Editorial Board of this journal.
