In most cases, Correctional Officers are not in the Prison education; inside-out room where the class occurs; however, this article discusses the prison exchange; drawbacks and benefits that can result from having Officers in crrectional pedagogy; the classroom. Given the structured power dynamics in a correc- tional facility, Officer presence and engagement in the classroom would seem to inherently go against many of the circle practice elements (such as trust, vulnerability, and safety from retaliation) that are vital in the Inside-Out model. While those elements are still at risk in certain facilities, we argue that Officer presence may have a negligible and potentially positive effect on student experience, and has a positive effect on the Officers. In this paper we do not argue that the Inside-Out model should evolve to include Officers; rather, we are suggesting that given instructor capacity and relationship with the facility, required Officer pres- ence can not only be managed to have minimal negative impact for those most vulnerable, but can be used to enhance existing learning outcomes and create new ones. Providing opportunities for higher education in correctional facilities involves navigat- ing the general limitations of all correctional facilities while also navigating limitations specific to a particular facility. This is especially true when delivering a course in the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program (hereafter referred to as Inside-Out) where traditional college (Outside) students join incarcerated (Inside) students for a shared classroom space. One of the goals and, when fulfilled, one of the benefits of the Inside-Out model is the creation of a safe and open learning environment for the stu- dents. This safety and openness is achieved, when possible, by having a space in the facility where correctional staff (for the purposes of this paper, correctional officers will be the focus) are not immediately present. At some facilities, officer presence is unavoidable and instructors must navigate the ways in which officer presence in a 2022 Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences
