INTRODUCTION I. The Background for and Objectives of the Analysis IN RECENT years there has been an increasing interest amongst observers of European integration for the political and administra- tive processes at a national level as a result of membership of the European Communities. The dependent variable of the various studies within EC research has traditionally been 'integration' be- tween six European states, and now nine. Instead of always looking at EC cooperation 'from above'-at a Community level-it has also proved interesting to look at the cooperation 'from below', at a national level. The national political and administrative processes resulting from EC cooperation are therefore the dependent variable of this analysis. As one of three new member states, Denmark has had to under- take an adaptation of its political and administrative processes to the special conditions of Community membership. The patterns of adaptation within Danish political and administrative processes are to a large extent reactions to general trends in 'the integration' between the EC countries, and in particular, to the Danish EC policy.
