Bruce Russett stepped down as the editor in July 2009, and this current issue of JCR is the first one that has been under my complete supervision as the new editor. Bruce first took on his responsibilities as editor of JCR back in 1972, and his thirty-seven-year run as editor has simply been superlative. JCR was strug- gling at the time Bruce took over the reigns, but under his editorship JCR soon reemerged as a major outlet for rigorous scientific research on conflict processes. Today, JCR is widely regarded as the leading interdisciplinary journal in the social sciences devoted to basic research on conflict dynamics within and between states. This would not have been possible without the hard work and intellectual sophisti- cation that Bruce displayed as editor as well as his unflinching commitment to publish social science research of the highest quality. We are all in deep gratitude to Bruce for all of this. Of course, he did all of this as JCR editor while also amassing a prolific record of publications that established him as one of the most prominent international relations scholars in all of the social sciences. For this we all humbled. Given this record of accomplishment by Bruce, it is an honor to assume the edi- torship of JCR, but it also carries with it a strong responsibility to sustain the excellence of JCR as a leading journal in the social sciences. With this in mind, as I look to the future of JCR, I want to convey that I am committed to retain and further develop its strong interdisciplinary focus while also maintaining its reputa- tion for publishing rigorous theoretical and empirical work. These have been the foundation of JCR's past success, and they will remain so under my tenure as editor. In short, my goal as the new editor is to ensure that JCR remains a flagship journal in conflict studies, and in so doing I will seek to build on JCR's existing areas of strength. As such, I am committed to strengthening JCR's reputation as an outlet for innova- tive and rigorous theory while maintaining its reputation for publishing high-quality statistical and experimental work. In addition, I would like to see JCR strengthen its interdisciplinary orientation. For example, more rigorous social scientific work is emerging within the field of international law, and I would like JCR to position itself as an important outlet for such work. Similarly, I will welcome innovative social sci- entific work on human rights, human security, terrorism, and the conflict dynamics of environmental change. Finally, I will be interested in publishing research-note-type articles that seek to provide analytical and comparative reviews of recent quantitative
