handle is hein.journals/jacadels1 and id is 1 raw text is: FOREWOR Professor Roger Brownsword, King's College London I t is a pleasure to write a few words by way of introduction to this inaugural issue of the Journal ofAcademic Legal Studies (JOALS). Distinctively, JOALS offers an opportunity for students, both undergraduate and post-graduate, to present their work for publication in a refereed open-access on-line outlet where it will appear alongside the contributions of established academic lawyers. In Europe, where the law reviews tend to be dominated by the work of experienced academics, JOALS represents an important and extremely welcome initiative. The transition from student to established academic can be a tough one. Apprenticeship can be painful. Rejection slips from the leading law reviews can be demoralising, reports from referees damning. It is not always obvious what it is that the law reviews are looking for. Even a chapter in a top class doctoral dissertation will not always readily convert into a publishable journal paper. For a journal to encourage submissions from those who are still on the nursery slopes of academic lawyering is, indeed, a bold move and it is one that signals a willingness to feed back to authors in a constructive way. As Europeans enter the Twenty-First Century, it is clear that the legal academy, while retaining an orientation to legal doctrine and the practice of law (in the narrow professional sense), is addressing the larger issues raised by regulation and dispute- settlement in our multi-cultural, increasingly connected, and ever more technologically sophisticated societies. With this broader focus, law becomes both an inter-disciplinary and a transnational study; and it is right that JOALS offers a forum for debate to all those within the academy. The launch of JOALS is an auspicious occasion. Congratulations are due to Nils Hoppe and his colleagues at the University of Hannover whose brainchild this project is. I am confident that this excellent opening issue, with its particular focus on bioethics and medical law, is the first of many such volumes.
