Tom Smith's arrangements were breathtaking. We had a delightful Hawaiian recep- tion at the Willows which everyone enjoyed; went on a Hawaiian brunch cruise on the world's largest catamaran and our annual dinner-dance Joseph I. Previto was preceded by Hawaiian cocktails, appetizers and music. Bill Pravel did a magnificent job in preparing the educational programs for the meeting. This included sessions on alternate dispute resolution, the use of computers for intellectual property law practice, fran- chising and trademarks and recent developments in intellectual property law. We were fortunate to have Don Quigg, the Com- missioner of Patents and Trademarks, address us at our Saturday luncheon: Ralph Oman, Register of Copyrights, at our Monday luncheon and Judge Mar- key at our Tuesday luncheon. We were also fortunate in having Wendel Willkic, general counsel of the Commerce Department, speak for a few minutes at the beginning of our first business meeting and Don Banner updated the Section regard- ing plans for the bicentennial celebration next year. Our business sssions went smoothly. You will find a listing of resolutions approved or defeated at pages 8-11 of this Newsletter. With respect to Resolution 102-1 concerning har- monization, there was a warmup session on Monday morning in which Messrs. Banner and Fiorito spoke against harmonization and Messrs. Brunet and Thompson spoke in favor. No vote was taken on har- monization in Hawaii. Instead, a special meeting on harmonization was held September 9 and 10 in Wash- ington at the Marriott Gateway Hotel where various resolutions were debated by the membership and voted upon. (See page 12.) During this Association year, we were fortunate in having the House of Delegates pass the following res- Published by the Section of Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law of the American Bar Association Volume 8, Number 1, Summer/Fall 1989 olution concerning qualifications for Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of Patents: RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association fa- vors in principle that any person selected to be Com- missioner or Deputy Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks be a lawyer having experience in patent and trademark law, knowledgeable in both domestic and intemational laws concerning these matters, and well qualified to represent the United States Patent and Trademark Office domestically and to advocate United States positions on patent and trademark matters in- ternationally. We were able to use this resolution in our commu- nications with the Department of Commerce. We also used a previously passed resolution con- cerning the desirability of having patent judges on the federal circuit in personal meetings which we had with the Justice Department and with the White House staff. For the first time we will have a Washington rep- resentative who will present our Section's positions on intellectual property matters before Congress, the White House, etc. At the last Council meeting, Jan Jancin, a former chairman of our Section, and one who is well known to everyone in the Section and who has already done so much for the Section, has been named our Washington representative, effective Jan. 1. 1 have known Jan for many years and I have always known him to do an excellent job. Our Section can rest assured that with Jan we will be well represented in Washington. As usual, the success of our past Association year was the result of planning, hard work and dedication of the Division and Committee Chairs. My thanks to each of the above in making my job much easier. I would also like to thank the Council, the officers and Honorary Council for their unwavering support during my term. My thanks and appreciation to our Section Administrator, Michele Kukowski Bridges and her assistant, Hazel Matthews-Walker, for their abil- ity to cope with my many requests and foibles as well as the professional and efficient manner in which they handled Association affairs last year. Finally, I want to thank you for giving me the priv- ilege, honor and pleasure to serve as your chairman. It was an experience which I shall never forget. Ma- halo! Joseph J.
