Editorial
One of the most satisfying aspects of the journal editor's role is the
task of writing editorials - although the invevitable delay between
writing and publication is a challenge. My comments in the last
issue (written in August) were driven by my reactions to the
international conference in Montreal. One of the points I made
then was about the evidence emerging from parts of Africa on the
horrendous current and future plight of children. At that time,
Steven Lewis argued in his moving presentation to the conference
that this was a challenge for the whole international community,
with social work having a particular role and responsibility.
Since that time, the situation in Africa and the possibility of a
special issue of the journal have been very much on my mind. Three
things have occurred to reinforce the idea. At a recent political
meeting, one of our members of parliament presented me with the
same statistics to which Mr Lewis referred. Having just been in
contact with the Canadian Minister in charge of international
affairs, he described with great feeling the current situation and the
alarming prospects for a whole future generation of children.
At almost the same time, I received in the mail an appeal from
one of the international relief organizations asking for support for a
number of critical situations in several parts of Africa, particularly
the urgent need for aid to provide the most basic of life necessities
for children.
The third stimulus resulted from re-reading the final section of
this issue. The reader will note that, among the books reviewed,
three refer to edited works where the content deals with cross-
country issues and where viewpoints are presented from a
multinational perspective. This format of inviting authors from a
range of countries to write about a common theme could be used
for a special issue of the journal. It would discuss, from a spectrum
of national viewpoints, how social work could and should respond
