handle is hein.journals/intsocwk34 and id is 1 raw text is: Editorial I am writing this editorial in an airport on my way home from the 25th International Congress of Schools of Social Work held in August 1990 in Lima Peru. As I write, I am keenly conscious of the wealth and comfort that surrounds me in this airport and of the suffering, fears and poverty that I left behind just a few hours ago. But I am equally aware that, unless I am careful, in a few more hours I will be once again immersed in the myriad details of my immediate academic responsibilities and that many of these experiences will be quickly dulled, rather than influence my thinking, writing, research and practice in the years ahead as they should. Interacting with colleagues from some twenty-five or more countries, committed to international development in the midst of a part of the world struggling to bring about fundamental changes, is a powerful experience. Over and over again during these past few days I was struck by the tremendous wealth of ideas, knowledge and experience that exists within our international family. Dr Hubert Campfens commented on the impressive number of papers that had been submitted and the challenges for selecting that this created for his fellow organizers. Exciting as is this richness of knowledge, it is strongly tempered by the challenges created for us in developing systems of making this knowledge more readily available and the role that ourjournal, International Social Work can and must carry in this critical role of knowledge disbursement. There is just so much that we can learn from each other. As Dr Ralph Garber stated in his closing address, thankfully the era is ended when, in our profession, one part of the world was viewed as the dispenser of knowledge and the rest as the grateful recipients. We continue to learn that we all share common problems and common challenges. We know well how to adjust ideas and programmes developed in one part of the world to our own specific realities. But we are still in need of a much more effective method of gathering and dispersing ideas from all corners of the world in a manner that ensures these ideas are timely and relevant.
