There are those whose goal is to compare and contrast specific social work or social welfare matters between and among countries. Secondly, there are articles which take a more cosmic view about worldwide developments in such things as family life, children, care for the aged, etc., and analyse these from a philosophical, sociological or political perspective with a focus on the implications for professional teaching and practice. Thirdly, there are articles which deal with emerging concepts in a particular area of the world such as deinstitutionalization or normalization with com- mentary on the aspects of their relevance for social work. The last type of article, the fourth, has a highly targeted focus, dealing with specific aspects of practice in specific parts of the world. The articles selected for this edition of International Social Work clearly reflect this spectrum. As I become increasingly experienced in the work of the journal and its role and functioning, my conviction grows that this range of diversity in article types is important. Each form of article helps us to get a clearer picture of the challenges facing our profession as we aspire to strengthen an international perspective. Ours is an extremely complex and difficult profession in which to practise from a world perspective. In each of our respective areas of the world, we are faced with that critical reality that differentiates us from many other professions. We have to come to terms with value issues and understand them and their modifications. We have to come to terms with political differences and their shaping of social policies and programmes, with socioeconomic and cultural differences among our clients and the resultant challenge of applying this knowledge and these skills in direct practice with clients. And all of this needs to be done within a framework of an ongoing, varied and critical research base. What is intriguing, and indeed satisfying, is to experience the wealth of our knowledge and the diversity of its application throughout the world through submitted articles. We seem to be International Social Work (SAGE, London, Newbury Park and New Delhi), Vol. 32 (1989), 5-6.
