January 1997 About International Law Update International Law Update is a monthly publication designed to assist US. practitioners and scholars of public and private international law to stay current in these fields. To this goal, International Law Update reports, for example, on recent international opinions of the Federal Courts, on applications of the Hague Evidence and Service Conventions, on major intergovernmental commercial agreements, on cases dealing with sovereign immunity and enforcement of judgments, and on significant changes in public and private international law affecting American interests at home and abroad. About the Authors John R. Schmertz, Jr. is professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. Currently he teaches International Law, International Civil Litigation, International Criminal Law, European Union Law and Conflicts. For over twenty years, he has authored the Federal Rules of Evidence News, a nationally circulated newsletter. Mike Meier received his masters degree in political science from the University of Berlin, Germany, pursued studies in international law at Yale Law School, and received his JD. and LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center. He has worked for the Argentine Government, the European Parliament, and the German Chamber of Commerce in Japan.
