Future International Challenges
Highlight Spring Meeting Program
The schedule is set for the Section's Annual Spring
Meeting, to be held at the Capital Hilton April 26-29,
1989. Last year's meeting was attended by over 400 law-
yers from across the United States. This year attendance
will be enhanced by European, Canadian, and Latin
American lawyers as we cosponsor the event with the
Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA). The full agenda
begins on page 3, and r.,gistration forms are on pages
6 and 7.
Spring Meeting Highlights
Three Showcase Programs: The spring meeting will
feature three showcase programs of particular interest.
Leading off Thursday's schedule will be a two-hour ple-
nary session entitled Key Aspects of GATT and Pub-
lic International Law: Recent Developments and the
Most Difficult Issues Ahead, keynoted by Professors
John H. Jackson and Detlev F. Vagts. Thursday after-
noon will feature a second showcase program on the
Significant Judicial and Arbitral Decisions in Interna-
tional Law that have occurred in the past year. The pro-
gram will offer an in-depth review of the key decisions
in the United States Supreme Court and Courts of
Appeals, the European Court of Justice, the Iran-U.S.
Claims Tribunal, the Court of Appeals for the Federal
Circuit and Court of International Trade. Highlighting
Friday's activities will be a two-hour showcase program
entitled Europe's Single Market: The Business, Politi-
cal and Legal Consequences of 1992. The European
Community's goal of achieving a single market by 1992
has engendered enormous interest both in Europe and
the U.S., and this program will offer participants the

Plan Now for the Hawaii Meeting

Pacific International Commercial Arbitration: A
User's Report; 1992 and the European Commu-
nity: What It Means to American Business; The
Role of the International Court of Justice in the Set-
tlement of International Disputes; and Criminal
Law Issues in Doing Business Abroad. In addition,
over fifteen committees will be offering substan-
tive programs. The Section's social events will
include our International Reception at the Plaza
Club and the Annual Dinner Dance Honoring Past
Section Chairmen.

Successful Fail Meeting In San Diego
The Pacific Century Has Truly Arrived
A record 220 attorneys attended Buying, Selling
and Manufacturing in the Pacific in San Diego
October 27-30, 1988. Program Chair John W.
Brooks of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, San
Diego, highlighted the commercial importance of the
Pacific Rim. He pointed out that thirty-four nations,
ranging from Canada in the north to New Zealand in
the south, and from Colombia in the east to India in the
west are generally classified as on the Pacific Rim. These
countries represent a $3 trillion market which is grow-
ing at the rate of $3 billion a week.
The first day of the program was devoted to Buying
and Selling in the Pacific. John Pellegrini, Ross &
Hardies, New York, discussed planning factors relating
