Marks and Vice- Chairman John F. Olson, has established an important role 1,n zehalf of the organized bar in the implementa- tion of he agreements recently reached with Iran re- garding U.S. claims. The agreements, which resulted in the return of the 52 American hostages, if imple- mented, will raise a number of technical and substan- tive legal issues. Senior representatives of the U.S. Government, including an Assistant Secretary- Desig- nate of the Treasury, the Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control and its Chief Counsel, the Act- ing Legal Adviser of the State Department and senior Justice Department personnel, attended a meeting February 1 with the Steering Group of the Section's Committee on Foreign Claims to brief it on the agree- ments and to confer on areas of implementation in which the government would welcome suggestions from the private bar through the Committee. Following the meeting the Steering Group met to organize the work of the Committee so as to meet the most immediate needs first. Apart from advising senior government personnel of specific problems that arise under the agreements for particular claimants, the most significant area where the agreements with Iran require more detailed implementation is in the estab- lishment of the International Claims Tribunal, which is to decide U.S.-Iranian claims. The Committee expects to confer actively with appropriate government officials in the next weeks and months on issues that arise, and any Section member having a particular problem or wishing to offer particular suggestions is urged to get in touch with the Committee Chairman, Lee R. International Trade Law Institute Scheduled The International Law Section will sponsor an in- stitute entitled Critical Issues of International Trade Law: The Realities of Implementing the Tokyo Round Results on April 21 and 22, 1981 in Washington, D.C. This institute will focus on important developments and fundamental issues on a variety of topics concern- ing U.S. international trade law, including: a. U.S. government organization: b. Escape clause and safeguard policies; c. Antidumping matters; d. Countervailing duties and subsidies; e. Judicial review and the role of courts in interna- tional economic policy; f. Compliance measures, dispute resolution and ef- fect of citizen complaints against foreign nations: and g. Panel discussion on future trends in law and policy. The institute will be chaired by Professor John H. Jackson of the University of Michigan School of Law and will include numerous other participants from government, academic and private sectors. The charge for the two-day institute, including materials and lunches, will be $250 for ABA members and $275 for others (with a special charge for a limited number of full-time university faculty members of $100).
