Cudahy everal months ago I was invited to partici- pate in a conference at the University of Col- orado Law School, honoring Dr. Alfred Kahn on his 90th birthday. I had known Fred (as we call him) since he was chairman of the New York Public Service Commission in the early 1970s, and I served in a like capacity on the Wisconsin Commission. He was later chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), where he spearheaded the historic deregulation of the airlines (already suggested by the Ford administration and precur- sor steps taken by former chairman, John Rob- son). Later still, Dr. Kahn became chief advisor on inflation to the White House. Before his career in regulation, Fred was an economics professor at Comell University and dean of the university's College of Arts and Sciences; throughout he has been a prominent economist, author, and extraordinarily popular speaker and discussant on ground-breaking economic ideas. The organizer of the Boulder conference was Philip Weiser, a law professor and executive director of the Silicon Flatirons Center, which is attached to the law school. Professor Weiser provided the various documents generated at the conference, including a copy of Dr. Kahn's remarks and personal reminiscenc- es about the historic deregulation of the airlines, about antitrust policy, and about the application of these developments to current topics.
