Mark Garlinghouse, who has jus.t completed his tour in the post. His leadership stimulated the production of programs for the fall, spring, and annual meetings of uniformly high merit and a continuance of high-qual- ity written reporting to the Section membership. Special thanks are due also to W 'fliam R. Brown of Houston, who had the principal responsibility for the prepara- tion of the Section's Annual Report, and John P. Vukasin, Jr., Henry F. Lippitt II, and Howard J. Trienens, who arranged the excellent program for the annual meet- ing in Hawaii. For the present year, A. Joseph Dowd will be in charge of produc- tion of the Annual Report and Thomas M. Debevoise will head the Program Commit- tee. They will appreciate the co-operation of all members of the Section. My next duty is to encourage the members not to be unduly concerned about the Section during my term of office. Utile per inutile non viviatur. The Section is well-organized and staffed at all levels and requires only a gentle hand on the helm. In addition, the presence of Harold L. Russell of Atlanta, Ga., as Chairman-Elect is very reassuring and the continuance of George R. Perrine as Section Delegate to the House of Delegates means that the Section's views will continue to receive care- ful consideration in the deliberations of that body. The Section is happy to welcome aboard as its Board Liaison Representative John P. Bracken of Philadelphia. John promises to attend our meetings to the extent his busy schedule will permit. It has been suggested to the Section Chairmen that they should review, with their Council and committee members, the educational objectives and program of their own Sections and to develop and initiate useful special projects in this area. This is something which we may usefully discuss in our fall and spring meetings. In this connection it should be of interest to know something about the present mem- bership in this Section. We are indebted to tho ABA computer for the following data, based upon December, 1973, membership. In December, 1973, the Section had only 2,459 members, ranging in age from twenty-five to an eighty and over group, said to include forty- three lawyers. The median age is fifty-five. From the middle thirties through the middle six- ties, the number of members at each age level is relatively constant with fifty to sixty members at each age level. Members l.ive principally in the regulatory and business centers of the various states of the United States. There is at least one mem .r in each city of commercial importance. The state of New York leads in total Section membership with 217, followed by the District of Columbia with 202, California with 176, Illinois with 147, Texas with 139, Pennsylvania with 112, Ohio with 101, Missouri with ninety-one, Florida with eighty-three, Virginia with seventy-four, Maryland with sixty-four, Michigan with sixty- three, and New Jersey with fifty-six.
