Editors' Statement
Artificial Intelligence has in recent years had a significant impact on law,
and law has become an area of major importance to artificial Intelligence
and computer science. This impact has given rise to questions in a
number of areas: the nature of legal expert systems, their implications for
legal processes and legal decision-making and related social issues raised
by the introduction of such systems; programmers' liability, computer
misuse; Intellectual property rights; professional codes of conduct and
their implications for artificial intelligence researchers; the problems of
computer representation and computational semantics for law; and more
general philosophical aspects of law and artificial intelligence. The range
of issues raised is reflected by the papers presented in this first issue of
Law, Computers & Artificial Intelligence.
The purpose of this new journal is to provide a focus for articles and
notes on law and artificial Intelligence, and to facilitate an Intellectual and
practical exchange of ideas, knowledge and results. In addition to the
publication of significant research papers, the journal will Include a
calendar of future events, a review of new publications, and an open
forum section where contributors can express their views on topical
Issues. One issue each year will be devoted to a particular theme. This
year's theme will be 'Legal Implications of Electronic Data Interchange'.
The Interdisciplinary nature of Law, Computers & Artificial
Intelligence has resulted In an unusually large board of Advisory Editors
drawn from the disciplines of law, computer science, sociology and
philosophy. We are proud to have received the enthusiastic support of
our Advisory Editors who, over the two years It has taken to plan this
project, have given us a great deal of very welcome assistance. The
successful launch of this journal is due in no small part to their help and
encouragement.
