handle is hein.journals/imgratv9997 and id is 1 raw text is: INTRODUCTION The acceleration of social and geographic mobility occasioned by the political and industrial revolutions of the nineteenth century is one of the most important factors in the development of man's present state of social consciousness. Indeed, in the United States alone, nothing aroused man's interest in the social destiny of his fellow man as profoundly as the great waves of immi- gration and the subsequent evolution of a new stage in urban maturation. The International Migration Digest was established to encourage further advancement in the study of social and geographic mobility by presenting a multilateral coverage of activities and research in this field. The Digest is divided into five departments, i.e., articles, legislation, news, statistics, and books. The articles on social and especially geographic mobility are to be chosen from sociological reviews published both here and abroad. They will be chosen from those which treat the subject matter from a sociological point of view with special regard for theory and measurement. This section may be broadened some time in the future to include articles which give a psychological approach to mobility. Summaries of important legislation regarding migration enacted both here and abroad form the legislation department. Under International Migration News items regarding migrant activi- ties and studies in the fields of migration will be found. In the statistical department we will give an analytical presentation of current statistics on mobility. Our book department will include selective bibliographies, book reviews, book lists, and possibly book condensations. In organizing this digest, we realize of course, that it is impossible to present a totally comprehensive view of so vast a subject. Our hope, however, is that what is presented here may engender an intensified interest in one of the most telling social problems of our time. -The Editors
