Exogamy and Earnings in Sweden 1990-20091 Martin Dribe Lund University Paul Nystedt Jon/Oping International Business School This paper analyzes the impact of intermarriage on the economic inte- gration of immigrants in Sweden, measured by annual earnings. We use longitudinal register data for the period 1990-2009 for the total population of immigrant men born 1960-1974. The results reveal large intermarriage premiums, but overall this seems to be a result of selection effects as most of the premium is visible already at the time of marriage. For the most economically marginalized immigrants, how- ever, an intermarriage premium arises within marriage implying that forming a union with a native triggers a more rapid earnings growth among them. INTRODUCTION Intermarriage with the host country population has long been considered vital to immigrant societal integration. A high proportion of interethnic marriages are indicative of a society where cultural and socioeconomic barriers have been overcome and immigrants have adopted the characteris- tics of the majority population (Alba and Golden 1986; Lieberson and Waters 1988; Pagnini and Morgan 1990; Alba and Nee 2003).
