THE PRESIDENT'S LETTER
At the end of June, it will be three years since your present
officers assumed their duties. They started with great enthusiasm, knew
that they were still pioneers in work which had started only three years
ago, they continued the work which had begun and explored new avenues
of activity, and are now at the point where they will turn over their
offices to a new generation. The new officers will continue in unabated
enthusiasm.
The past three years were indicative of the progress which we
may expect in the future and of the areas to which particular attention
should be given. We made progress in numerous areas. Some of this pro-
gress may be well identifiable, such as in the area of communication
among our members, in the Bulletin and in personal visits, in our first
publication in book form, and in our affiliation with professional
organizations in thb field of librarianship and laws Other types of
progress seemed to be intangible - the area of goodwill among law
librarians of various countries - until the meeting of April 24, 1965
took place. It was the first meeting of European law librarians; it is
reported elsewhere in this issue. Some of those who came, may have
wondered about the advisability or need of such a meeting when that
memorable day started, but at the end of the day all those who attended
were enthusiastic about their joint experiences and asked for more
meetings to come, first on a European basis and thereafter on an inter-
national level. We had learned that a truly International Meeting was
a premature thought; howeverg we learned that regional meetings will
establish the foundation for the next international meeting.
Thus, your present officers take leave of you. Their final
effort will be a Panel on The Latin American Law - A Task for Law
Librarians, to be held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the
American Association of Law Libraries on June 28 in New York. The new
officers, elected in accordance with the proposal of the Board of
Directors and headed by K. Howard Drake as President, will take over
on July 1, 1965. The other officers and the elected members of the
Board of Directors are known to you through prior communications in
connection with the election procedures. In the meantime, the Board
of Directors will appoint the remaining four Directors.
As your President, I want to take this opportunity to ex-
press my gratitude to the many members who made the past three years a
deep experience and to urge you to lend your full support to the new
officers to whom our best wishes are due. Progress there will be. But
it will be hard earned progress, and aims such as the promotion of the
idea of a World Law Library or World Law Libraries will consume, not
