Health Law Review > 1995

1 This issue of the Health Law Review focuses on ethics committees. These committees have been widely
adopted but, with the exception of research ethics boards, there is no unanimity as to the roles that such
committees should play in medical decision-making. Catherine Miller's article outlines the current situation and the
proposed recommendations made by the Tri-Council Working Group regarding the ethical conduct of research
involving human subjects in Canada.

2 As a follow-up to our last issue that examined the safety of Canada's blood supply, we are publishing the
recommendations for improving safety of blood products in Canada from the Interim Report presented by Mr.
Justice Krever.

3 The Institute recently hosted a very successful conference of the researchers from a three-year SSHRC funded
project entitled, Professional Norms in the Practice of Human Genetics. Financial assistance for this conference
was also provided by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and the University of Alberta
Conference Fund. The papers presented at that conference will be published this fall in the upcoming issue of the
Health Law Journal.

4 We regret to announce that the health law databases (Health Law Cases and Health Law Articles) have been
discontinued. The databases have, since their inception, been generously funded by the Alberta Law Foundation.
Unfortunately declining interest rates have resulted in a dramatic decrease in the funds available to the Foundation
for support of many worthwhile projects. All of the existing data will be archived. We are canvassing a number, of
possibilities in an attempt to secure alternate funding.
