It is believed that the faculty voted to appoint her dur- ing a closed session of its meet- ing Tuesday, January 18, Owens has been named to teach a first-year small group course on Clinical Crisis Intensifies; Bellow Appointment Near Following a December decision by the Cambridge and Somerville Legal Services (CASLS) to cut its caseload next year from 1500 to 500 cases, the resulting de- crease in the number of law students participating in that program has precipitated a sense of crisis concerning the future of clinical legal education at Har- vard. These events have occurred since that time: -More than 130 law students signed a petition drawn up by the Ad Hoe Committee for Clinical Legal Education demanding that the Law School act immediately to insure that each student inter- ested in clinical education and in serving the community be given that opportunity, whatever the cost; - The faculty-student Com- mittee on Clinical Legal Educa- tion has planned a survey which will be conducted next week to de- termine the extent of first- and second-year student interest in clinical legal education. -Two teams of approximately five students each have been or- ganized to work this spring on an experimental basis with the Boston Legal Assistance Pro- gram in Roxbury and East Bos- ton. - Visiting Professor Gary Bel. low, is expected to accept a per- manent tenured position on the faculty, subject to ratification by (Continued on Page 4) Legal Aspects of Sex-based Dis. crimination In place of Visiting Lecturer Ruth Ginsburg, who de- cided not to teach at Harvard this spring after having received a tenured professorship from Co- lumbia Law School. Asked to confirm or deny the offer to Owens, Professor Phillip E. Areeda, chairman of the fac- ulty Appointments Committee, said he regretted the proprieties of the situation prevented him from making any comment on the question. Owens also de- clined to comment. Owens has been associated with the Law School since 1956 when she was appointed research assistant in law.
