Bok Elected Harvard President

Derek Curtis Bok, dean of the
Law School since 1968, has been
elected the 25th president of Har-
vard U*iversity, ending an ex-
haustive 11-month search for a
successor to President Nathan M.
Pusey. He will take office on July
1, 1971.
His election became official on
January 11 when Harvard's 30-
man Board of Overseers approved
the choice of the six Fellows of
Harvard College, who had 'con-
ducted the search for a' new presi-
dent.
Presildent Pusey, resigning af-
ter 18 years at the helm of Har-
vard' will become president -of
the Andrew Mellon 'Foundation.

Braucher Named to State Bei

Before Professor Robert A.
Braucher was sworn in last week
as Associate Justice of the Su-
preme Judicial Court of Massa-
chusetts, he had to surmount sev-
eral obstacles.
The confirmation of Republican
Governor Francis Sargent's nom-
ination of Republican Braucher
by the solidly Democratic Gov-
ernor's Council was not the chief
worry: it was unanimous.
The real trial came in Brau-
cher's Contrvct8 class when his
first-year students presided over
a breach-of-contract suit brought
by disgruntled class members
against the 25-year faculty vete-

century not to have been a grad-
uate of Harvard College. His cre-

ton University. While at the Law
School, Bok was an editor of the

On January 23, Bok stepped
down as dean of the Lawv School
in order to devote' the next six
months to intensive preparation
for the presidency of Harvard. He
was the Law School's seventh

Pusey Appoints Sacks
Acting Dean of School
Dane Professor of Law Albert
M. Sacks has been named acting
dean of Harvard Law School by
President Nathan M. Pusey, it
was announced last Friday, Jan-
uary 23. His appointment was ef-
fective immediately.
Sacks has been associate dean
of the Law School since 1968, He
has worked closely with outgoing
Dean Derek C. Bok. Dean Bok is
