Born on February 9, 1962 in Bassano del Grappa (Vicenza), he graduated in 1986 in philosophy at the University of Padua on a thesis on nineteenth-century German metaphysics, titled Eduard von Hartmann e lafilosofia dell'inconscio. In 1992 he concluded a research Ph.D. in the history of political thought and political institutions at the Department of political studies of the University of Turin, with a dissertation on August Ludwig Schlozer e le Staatswissenschaften delxviii secolo supervised by Silvia Rota Ghibaudi. A large part of his research was conducted at the Max Planck-Institut fur Geschichte in Gottingen and the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbittel. After obtaining a post-doctoral fel- lowship at the Turin department in 1993, he continued his research during 1996-1997 at the Max Planck-Institut fur Europdische Rechtsgeschichte in Frankfurt am Main, with Michael Stolleis. In 1999 and 2001 he profited from two yearly grants from the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiflung in order to inves- tigate eighteenth-century German literature, particularly the writings of Christoph Martin Wieland, in collaboration with Herbert Jaumann at the University of Greifswald. In the period 2000-2004 he held a grant from the Dipartimento di lingue e letterature anglo-germaniche of the University of Padua for research on the eighteenth-century political and utopian novel in Germany. Then in 2005 he became ricercatore in German literature, and subse- quently associate professor in 2007 and extraordinary professor in 2011, in the history of political ideas at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Padua. Merio Scattola was board member of the Althusius-Gesellschaft and the edi- torial board of several reviews (Respublica, Anales del Seminario de Historia de la Filosofla, Storia delpensiero politico, Grotiana), and his scholarly activities ranged exceptionally wide, in particular comprising three thematic areas: the transfor- mation of the concept of natural law in the Middle Ages and the early-modern period; the professional and academic organisation of the political in the early- modern period; the connections between literature and moral philosophy from the perspectives of ancient prudence and modern political theory.
