handle is hein.journals/goal2 and id is 1 raw text is: JL_.A TO PROMOTE FULL AND EQUAL PARTICIPATION IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION BY MINORITIES AND WOMEN Commission's Midyear Prouram is Dedicated to the memory of the Honorable Thurood marshall I On Sunday, January 24, 1993 the most notable civil rights lawyer and first black United States Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall passed away. Justice Marshall will always be remembered for his commitment to justice and equality. As a student of the late Charles Houston, Justice Marshall developed legal skills to accompany his passion for fairness. Without a doubt, Goal IX is a reminder of the commitment and the unfinished aspiration of Justice Marshall. Indeed, it was not only fitting that the ABA Commission on Opportunities for Minorities in the Profession dedicate the Midyear Meeting Program to justice Marshall, but it was appropriate. The tribute was only a prelude to the respect that the entire profession will pay to Justice Marshall. The Commission submitted a resolution to the ABA House of Delegates (copy on page 8) proclaiming the 1993 ABA Annual Meeting in honor of Justice Marshall. All meeting activities will cease for a one minute moment of silence in recognition of the many contributions Justice Marshall made tn the legal profession and the United States. The Commission Midyear Meeting Program took place on Saturday, February 6, 1993 at the Hynes Convention Center. It was a great program and Boston was a great city to have this program. Expanding The Base - Employment Strategies forl Minorities in the Legal Profession was a proper theme for the program. I Past ABA President John Curtin, gave the welcome address for Boston, I Elaine Epstein and Richard Soden also welcomed the Commission to Boston on behalf of the Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations, respectively. Over 120 people attended the program and luncheon with a mixture of practicing lawyers, judges and law students in attendance. Session I addressed What is Qualified or what is meant by employers when they say they are looking for qualified minority candidates. Session II discussed positions available after law school and areas of practice that minority law students may not have heard about in law school. Wayne Budd, former Associate Attorney General for the United States and a partner at Goodwin, Proctor & Hoar, gave the luncheon address. His comments reflected the wealth of experience and knowledge chat he has obtained in his career, Finally, the program ended with Session III on Making Diversity SPRING 1993 in your Environment. The Midyear Meeting committee did a wonderful job of planning the meeting. Special thanks to Kay Hodge, Carol Ross-Burnett and the Massachusetts Bar Association for an excellent program and enjoyable reception.
