A Message from the IMGL President
Tony Coles

Tony Coles

As MANY READERS wiLL KNow, the International Mas-
ters of Gaming Law (IMGL) was established in 2002
by a group of prominent gaming lawyers and has now
grown significantly and has members in many jurisdictions
throughout the world. But the founders' vision of an orga-
nization that would be an international educational force
among gaming professionals continues and since its for-
mation IMGL has achieved, and now exceeds, its goals of
promoting the understanding of the gaming industry and
the proper regulation of the industry.
I am proud to have been elected as IMGL's first pres-
ident from outside North America and I believe that this
move emphasizes IMGL's policy of international expan-
sion and will enhance the way in which IMGL serves the
industry. IMGL's educational work will continue to ex-

of Gaming Law, is also a partner at Jeffrey Green Russell in

pand in 2010 with two conferences, one in New York
City in the spring and the other in Madrid, Spain in Oc-
tober. IMGL will continue its publication of Casino
Lawyer, Canadian Gaming Lawyer, and European Gam-
ing Lawyer magazines and, for the first time, IMGL will
introduce La Ley del Juego as its first gaming law mag-
azine dedicated to Spanish speaking jurisdictions, and
published in Spanish.
IMGL is widely regarded as the leading international
network for the best specialist gaming professionals
around the world, and the jurisdictions where IMGL has
members are continually increasing. This will continue
throughout 2010, with the result that the industry will be
better served by the expertise of the IMGL gaming law
experts. IMGL is also constantly increasing its affiliate
membership of consultants, regulators, and other spe-
cialist experts in the gaming industry, and the number of
young gaming lawyers who are affiliated to IMGL con-
tinues to grow indicating that the industry will be well-
served by IMGL expertise into 2010 and well beyond.
As the 2010 president of IMGL, I take over from my
brilliant predecessor Robert Stocker from Illinois who
has served IMGL so very ably as its president in 2008
and 2009. I am also proud that I will be supported
by Kelly Duncan (Louisiana) as vice president, Joerg
Hofmann (Germany) as secretary, Michael Zatezalo
(Ohio) as treasurer, Douglas Florence (Nevada) as affili-
ate vice president, and I. Nelson Rose (California) as vice
president-educator. This team, with all of our other dis-
tinguished colleagues, will ensure that in 2010 IMGL will
continue to serve the industry in the best possible way.
In 2010 we know that we will see the business and
regulatory environment for the industry change signifi-
cantly in many parts of the world. From my own juris-
diction, the UK, we will watch the possible introduction
into the United States of a new regime for Internet gam-
ing (something which the UK did some years ago), and
there are also expected to be important changes to regu-
lation in France, Italy, Denmark, and, possibly, Spain.
With the developments in gaming regulation planned in
South Africa and the ongoing discussions in Australia
and Ireland, we also know that we will be seeing a very
challenging and interesting year.
