EDITORIAL NOTES

                             TRAGEDY AND HOPE

This issue of FCR was created at a time of great shock, sadness, and growing hope and
resolve because of the September 11th attacks. We at Hofstra are inextricably linked to New
York City. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. were body blows to our lives and
communities. For example, Hofstra Law School lost one of its most prominent alumni dur-
ing the World Trade Center attack, Neil D. Levin, the executive director of the Port Authority
of New York and New Jersey. The nearby towns where many of our faculty, students, and
staff live lost unfathomable numbers of people who commuted to work at the World Trade
Center. Too many of the dead were young people at the threshold of fulfilling personal and
professional lives who were not given time to make contributions to their communities. We
grieve with their families and friends.
The days following the attacks demonstrated the humanity, courage, and compassion
within the Hofstra community. FCR's student managing editor, Carrie Anne-Tondo, worked
herself almost to exhaustion providing meals and supplies to the rescue workers. Hofstra stu-
dents served as medics and rescue workers. For example, Jack Squicciarini responded imme-
diately after the tragedy from the Amityville Fire Department, as did Steve Weitz, captain for
the Point Lookout-Lido Beach Fire Department and Jonathan Weiner from the Sea Cliff Fire
Department. These people are among the extremely courageous who enter burning buildings
and guide others to safety. Also, Audie Liametz, a doctor and a law student, medically
assisted those injured and gave up his time and efforts to assist those who desperately needed
help. We continue to donate blood and collect money for relief efforts. The best of the human
spirit rises when we are challenged and confront evil. These good souls help us to be confi-
dent that we will recover and grow but never forget the importance of defending and nurtur-
ing the humane, tolerant values that are at the heart of the AFCC, our family courts, our
nation, and our friends and colleagues around the world.
We in New York are deeply grateful for, and sustained by, the support and concern we
have received from all over the country and globe. The central lesson that we learn is that we
are interdependent and intertwined. One of the unfortunate results of the terrorist attack
(which, of course, pales in comparison to the tragedies it created) was the temporary cancel-
lation of the first-ever AFCC Conference in New York, which was to begin on September 13,
2001. That conference was to be an important occasion for building bridges between the
AFCC community and New York's matrimonial and family court community. Construction
has been delayed, not forgotten. We look forward to welcoming AFCC to New York in the
near future.
