W elcome to this issue of Feminist Criminology which has three interesting and
diverse articles. First, Nicole Carr, Kenneth Hudson, and Roma Hanks analyze
data from community-based juvenile residential programs to examine the ways in
which they operate as gendered organizations. They demonstrate that girls were
placed in these programs for less serious offenses than boys, remained under court
supervision much longer, and were more apt to be recommitted to residential treat-
ment, regardless of the seriousness of any new offense. Second, Karen Parker and
Amy Reckdenwald examine the structural correlates of female offending to evaluate
how patriarchy and other macro-level factors influence female criminality in urban
and rural areas. They find that private patriarchy is not a strong predictor of female
offending rates but note that this relationship may be notably different in rural ver-
sus urban areas. Finally, Ruth Mann examines government and advocacy group texts
on three recent Canadian domestic violence policy moments. She concentrates on
the strategies and tactics of Canadian anti-domestic violence advocates and their
efforts to delegitimize gendered constructions of domestic violence. She also
explores the ways that advocacy groups have fought to safeguard the rights of
women and children in the wake of this backlash movement.
I hope you enjoy the issue. Please help us ensure continued success of the jour-
nal by encouraging your institutions to subscribe to it. In addition, please continue
to send your scholarship to Feminist Criminology. We will be changing our submis-
sion process effective December 1, 2007. In the future, please go to the following
Web site to submit articles: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.conifc. You will log on to
the system, enter author information, and submit the article. Similarly, all reviews
will be managed through this system. Reviewers will receive an e-mail asking them
to accept or decline the review prior to receiving a second e-mail with information
about how to log on and access the review. If you have not already entered yourself
in our reviewer database, you also may go to the Web site and complete the neces-
sary information to be added to the system.
We are really excited about the new system and believe it will be more efficient.
It will send automatic reminders to reviewers if they are overdue in their reviews,
and it will allow authors to check the status of their manuscripts. We will continue
to receive correspondence at the femcrim@utc.edu address. If you have any prob-
lems with the new system or suggestions for improvement, please contact us. The
system is flexible and allows us to manipulate some features. We have tested it out
internally, but your input is welcomed.
