FDLI THE FOOD and DRUG LAW INSTITUTE

November 1987

FDLI Endowments to Honor
H. Thomas Austern and
Charles Wesley Dunn
In a nearly year-old campaign to solicit funds for the
establishment of endowments to honor the memories of
H. Thomas Austern and Charles Wesley Dunn, FDLI has
reached over 60% of its funding goals. The combined goal
for both endowments was $500,000 and pledges and
donations to date total $320,000. The H. Thomas Austern
Endowment will be used to support the Institute's Writing
Awards Competition and other educational activities. The
Charles Wesley Dunn Endowment will be used for the
Food and Drug Law Graduate Fellowship program.
H. Thomas Austern, familiarly known as Tommy,
practiced food and drug law for more than 50 years at the
firm of Covington & Burling, and made many scholarly
contributions to the field in the form of speeches and
articles. Austern served as Chairman of the Editorial
Advisory Board of the Food Drug Cosmetic Law Journal
until his death in 1984 and was a strong supporter of the
Institute since its 1949 beginning.
Charles Wesley Dunn founded the Food Law Institute,
precursor to today's FDLI. He established food and drug
sections in both the American Bar Association and the
New York State Bar Association and served for more
than 45 years as General Counsel to the Grocery
Manufacturers of America. Dunn initiated the publication
of the Food Drug Cosmetic Law Journal, wrote many
articles, and gained wide recognition as an authority on
food and drug law.

ANNOUNCEMENT
RE: CHANGE OF PUBLISHER
FOR THE JOURNAL
Since 1981, the Food Drug Cosmetic Law Journal has
been published by Academic Press, Inc. of San Diego,
CA. By mutual agreement, that relationship will terminate
with the mailing of the October 1987 issue of the Journal.
The new publisher of the Food Drug Cosmetic Law
Journal will be the Food and Drug Law Institute. The
new Journal will be a bimonthly publication rather than a
quarterly and will contain 20% more pages. The Institute
will continue to provide the editorial support to the
Journal, which contains the leading legal and regulatory
articles in the food and drug law field. In addition, it will
have major papers from the Food and Drug Law Institute
meetings and outstanding contributions by law students,
scholars, and regulatory officials.
The Journal's Editorial Advisory Board and the Institute
are looking forward to working to provide you with an
excellent, quality publication.
