Gordon and Leslie A. Honig V INTRODUCTION On February 25, 1988, New York State Senator Dep- uty Minority Leader Emanuel R. Gold (Dem., Forest Hills) and New York State Assembly Assistant Ma- jority Leader Alan G. Havesi (Dem., Forest Hills) held a public hearing at the New York County Lawyers Association concerning their proposed legislation on The Celebrity Rights Act, which would enable a de- ceased personality's relatives or transferees to con- trol the commercial rights to the personality's name, voice, signature, photograph or likeness. A number of children of deceased celebrities pre- sented testimony supporting the proposed Act, in- cluding John Wayne's son, Michael Wayne; W. C. Fields' grandson, Everett Field (an attorney who helped draft the California Right of Publicity Stat- ute; see box on page 19); and Clark Gable's son, John Clark Gable. Their testimony was typified by John Clark Gable's statement that his father's image was being tarnished by the marketing of demeaning pos- ters, greeting cards and T-shirts.
