Because of the constant media exposure commanded
by the events and personalities of professional sports,
problems in the industry are no secret to even the
most casual fan.' One recurring problem which con-
tinues to dominate headlines involves drug abuse by
professional athletes.2 Realizing that this may be the
most critical issue presently confronting the sports in-
dustry, the commissioners of the three major profes-
sional sports leagues-Major League Baseball (MLB),
the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the

National Football League (NFL)-have attempted to
implement drug programs that will effectively rid their
respective sports of this unfortunate situation.' The
various programs, however, have achieved only lim-
ited success,4 and thus, the responsibility for solving
the drug dilemma appears to have shifted to the in-
dividual teams.

management (the employer), the options available to
