The Court of Arbitration for Sport
An Alternative for Dispute Resolution in U.S. Sports
STEPHAN NETZLE

Introduction
In March 1983, the International Olympic Commit-
tee (IOC) established the Court of Arbitration for
Sports (CAS) [w]ith the purpose of facilitating the
settlement of disputes of [a] private nature arising
out of the practice or development of sport, and, in
a general sense, all activities pertaining to sport ...I
The CAS accepted its first case in 1986, and by the
end of 1991, it had received thirty-four requests from

International Sports Federations (IFs), National
Sports Federations (NFs), the IOC, and National
Olympic Committees (NOCs). The 1991 annual re-
port of the CAS explains that arbitral panels have
rendered five awards and five advisory opinions,
with eleven legal opinions being given by the IOC
Secretary General. The Secretary General also has
assisted in the settlement of eight cases, and five
cases remained without further proceedings.2
